Sigh - In Somniphobia

Posted on Monday, March 05, 2012

It’s always been a puzzle to me how Japan’s Sigh have managed to escape the confines of anonymity throughout their career. Don’t get me wrong, I realize having your debut album on some dude named Euronymous’ label near the peak of the Second Wave’s misanthropic headline-making doesn’t hurt. It also helps if said debut leads off with a Black Metal anthem as timelessly bad-ass as “A Victory of Dakini.” But not long after this, my interest in Sigh dropped off the face of the Earth. I seem to remember a cool bootleg CD of Venom covers, but I’m still waiting on the urge to hear Venom songs result in me reaching for anything other than Venom albums. The music I’ve heard from Sigh over the last decade or so hasn’t even been music. It’s been some kind of shit sandwich on LSD that weaklings at weak mags drool over. In Somniphobia is at least coherent. By far the most Metal they’ve sounded since I was wrapping up the 9th grade. Still, it’s pure shit. I’d literally rather watch reruns of The Golden Girls than subject myself to this unmemorable riff collage. It’s not enough for me to be thankful that a Sigh album actually has riffs. I haven’t seen it yet, but I know in my heart that the aforementioned happy faggot publications will try to tell you that this is the most meaningful music penned since John Lennon’s “Imagine.” It’s not. It sounds like a lower-tier US Black Metal band from 1999 trying to be Cradle of Filth. I don’t care if there’s a hot girl in this band, playing the recorder or whatever she does, I’m NEVER going to fuck her. This LP is a boredom quilt. I’d rather change the battery on a Chevy Lumina naked in subzero temperatures than force myself to like this happy Black/Thrash jam session. Go ahead and close the book. Scorn Defeat is still the only one you need.

I stupidly always hold out hope that a new Sigh album will somehow be awesome. It has been a disappointing life…

Hey “set” how can you be edgy and conservative at the same time?! Everybody hates Jack’s reviews because he doesn’t kiss anyone’s ass!

Not kissing someone’s ass and saying this album is trying to be Cradle of Filth are two totally different things. He doesn’t even talk about the music, just how they aren’t true anymore. What a terrible reviewer, I fault him in not hating this album, but for being totally fucking shitty in writing reviews. Plus all the “I’d rather…“‘s get really fucking old. I would feel ashamed if I ever submitted a review of this quality somewhere for people to see.

GhostOfOden: How many reviews have you ever written? These guys post new reviews every day, and what do you do? Cry about it when they don’t completely agree with you and validate your opinion. Fuck off over to one of the many websites that just regurgitate press releases and heap praise on everything. I think you’ll like that bullshit better.

I’m an avid writer, and to avoid bragging and only back up my thoughts, I have won several awards through my college for things such as “best essay” and “best poetry”. Didn’t I specifically state “I fault him in not hating this album”? Didn’t I? I see it right there. So that nullifies your little cry baby response. The fact of the matter is: The review in itself is absolute horseshit. This more a review of how Sigh aren’t true anymore than about stating anything about the actual music, something that a review should hold. But I said out that once and you’re just a dumb ass who can’t read worth a shit. And stick that true metal elitism up your ass.

I usually stay out of the comments, but this is all just too funny to ignore.

First of all, we welcome all disagreement and hate.

GhostOfOden, I think that what you mean to say is that you don’t fault Jack for hating the album. When you say “I fault him in not hating this album” that means that you are finding fault with him because he does not hate the album, which seems to be the exact opposite of what you meant to say. That you would complain about anyone else’s writing is ironic when your own is incomprehensible.
I also find it hilarious that a guy who calls himself “GhostOfOden” and mentions all the writing awards he supposedly won in college is somehow anti-elitism. What’s more elite than Odin (or “Oden,” as you apparently prefer) and college awards?
If you’re truly anti-elite, and I feel that you are (not a compliment, by the way), then unless you’re a hypocrite, burn your degree (if you have one), throw away the awards (if they exist), and change your pseudonym to “GhostOfJesus.” I think that would be more fitting for a common man such as yourself.

In any case, Metal Curse IS elite. The elite of the elite since 1990!
We write our reviews however we want, to please no one but ourselves. We are not politically correct, or fair, or balanced in any way. We are real, and that’s more than some people can handle.

The internet is a big place, GhostOfJesus, so please feel free to go troll elsewhere.

Are you really talking shit on my Internet name? Oh wow… It’s an internet name, you know, the sort of thing we use instead of using our real names. I never knew internet names were meant to be taken so literal…. And actually I prefer my real name, just not on random internet comment sections.
And yes, I mixed around “not” and “in”. I also spotted two more errors I made at the bottom as well because I wrote hastily without checking what I wrote. And do I care? Not really, because we know what I meant. Just you acting like some typical internet dweeb there. Incomprehensible?  Hardly.
Your sense of “realism” is distorted and downright laughable. Being truly elite is no better than being an ignorant deathcore kid who only thinks songs littered with breakdown are any good. You’re just sheep in a smaller niche. And I don’t give a shit about political correctness, balanced or whatever, you can write whatever you want. But as far as the term “review” goes, it’s absolute shit. This would be more fitting titled “My Opinion on Sigh’s History”.
