Babylon Whores - Deggael
This disc has a lot going for it, excellent and complex sound production, a rich crunchy bass-heavy sound, and an interesting mix of alchemical and cabalistic references in the lyrics. There is even a music video included on here as a Quick Time movie, for the computer-enabled among you, with footage of the band lurking around some European castle with the requisite Goth-babes. Yet this video illustrates my one major reservation about this band, the nagging feeling that these guys are yearning for mainstream attention, which carries over to their music. This causes them to come across like late period Sisters of Mercy crossed with Type O Negative. Their press release labels them as “Death Rockers,” which is a fair description. They wouldn’t sound too out of place on the radio between Rob Zombie and Korn, which I think is what Babylon Whores wants. If you think that’s what you want, give them a try.

This is disappointing, but I guess I’m not too surprised…

From the entry 'Burzum - Umskiptar' -
The recent deluge of bad Burzum makes me wonder what might have been if Varg hadn’t gone to prison. Was the the downward musical slide inevitable, and just delayed by the fact that he wasn’t really able to put out albums in the klink? Or is it solely because he needs the cash and is rushing to put out everything he can think of? I’d like to hope for the latter, but the history of metal in general suggests the former.

First I’d like to say that I never obtained a copy of Songs of Sorrow. Nor did I ever get the privledge to hear the final product. I parted ways with Larry Sapp and the band shortly before the release for personal reasons. I am still friends with Demian Heftel but I have not spoken with Tony Laureano in years. Like you, I preferred the “L.S.D” demo and sound. I did hear a couple of tracks from “S.O.S” and I agree that although a very good production, the sound lacked the mighty sound that was once Astaroth. Anyway, my influences have always been the thick, heavy and raw “Swedish” style and sound. For those that care, I played a Charvel/Jackson bass through an Ampeg SVT. And I loved bands like Dismember/Carnage, Entombed, Edge of Sanity, etc… Keep em’ tuned down and stay heavy \”/

I’ve sometimes found Goatwhore albums to have one or two songs I enjoy…the problem is figuring out where they are, since the entire album is one big riff salad start to finish. If they could figure out how to make an actual SONG—with a start, a middle, and an end, and an overarching theme or mood to tie them together (and “metal” doesn’t count)—they have the potential to be pretty good. Unfortunately, they fall into the same trap so many metal acts nowadays do: they confuse quantity with quality, and outward heaviness with internal vision.
